PAX Initiative
What is PAX?
X marks the spot, right? This initiative is envisioned to help identify physical and online localities or organisations in which LGBTQIA+ musicians would feel safe, welcomed, and supported in the practice of their musical artforms. It stands for PRISM-accredited spot (PAX), as well as being the Latin word for ‘peace’. By gaining accreditation and prominently displaying the PAX icon, you are making a commitment to community through identifying your organisation or locality as one that supports inclusivity, visibility, and safety.
Displaying the PAX emblem is a great way to signal to people who are feeling unsafe or marginalised that this is a place where all are welcome, and that their talents and arts are valued and appreciated.
Why is PAX important?
Even in this day and age, many in the Rainbow Community are still subject to discrimination, harassment, and in some cases even violence or physical and mental abuse. Sometimes this is most keenly felt in religious organisations or spaces where LGBTQIA+ people have traditionally sought sanctuary or enlightenment, but historically have encountered bigotry and hate. A lot of progress has been made in the last 50 years to help mend this relationship and create better community.
